Instructions for preparing GlycerolPlus Cornea for glaucoma shunt surgery

Workflow

Christopher Girkin, MD, MSPH, Director of the Glaucoma Service, University of Alabama at Birmingham, describes his workflow with GPC:

“The cornea is put in solution when the scrub tech opens.  I scrub and prepare the shunt and cornea, while the patient is prepared. I’m almost always done by the time the patient is ready. The cornea may not be fully hydrated by the time I trim it, but it usually doesn’t matter. I just cut a clear rectangle, hold it with utility forceps, take a #69 blade and bisect it horizontally, then scrape off the epithelium. It can’t take more a minute.”
